ABOUT
John Coltrane’s iconic piece has been studied by composers, jazz musicians, and in university music theory classes, for its harmonic structure as the unique melody unwinds through the cycle of descending thirds. Here are 20 intriguing, melodically and harmonically rich variations that will engage and challenge the audience and ensemble alike.
The theme is explored in all directions, with solos and ensemble interweaving in captivating ways. Most of the variations will be easily recognizable through their melodic or harmonic elements, but some will be less so, such as Variation #3, which highlights Coltrane’s cycle of major keys through B, G and Eb; Variation #18, which is the theme exactly retrograde, and finally, Variation #20, which only those who have heard the original 1959 recording will recognize as Coltrane’s cadenza on the final chord, a fitting conclusion.

ABOUT
Uncertainty underlies much of what we experience in life, and the very different moods, thoughts and feelings the word can convey, on the spectrum from hopeful anticipation to troubling disquiet. I endeavored to best utilize the stunning range of voices in a flute choir, in melodic and rhythmic motifs shared all over the spectrum, from the bright sounds of the piccolo on top, to the deep lows of contrabass flute, and everything in between- and in the varied textures from solos and sectional voices, to lush, dense, full ensemble harmony. Ultimately, I truly hope flutists will enjoy playing the piece, and that listeners will cue into some of their own emotions, and perhaps reflect on how much our state of mind rests in the concept of uncertainty, in all its forms.

Paganini’s famous Caprice #24 variations for violin have been adapted for many other instruments, and have also inspired masterworks by such greats as Brahms and Rachmaninoff. Here are 18 dynamic and ingenious original variations of Paganini’s classic, like you’ve never heard it before. (Note that I offer versions for 6-piece chamber ensemble (fl/clar/violin/vc/db/pno), and also flute/piano.) This is my version for woodwind quintet, which includes some special variations not heard in either of the other versions. And in contrast to those, this one is not a flute feature; all members of the group enjoy solos as well as highly varied ensemble work.
