20 Variations on John Coltrane’s classic
John Coltrane’s iconic piece has been studied by composers, jazz musicians, and in university music theory classes, for its harmonic structure as the unique melody unwinds through the cycle of descending thirds. Here are 20 intriguing, melodically and harmonically rich variations that will engage and challenge the audience and ensemble alike.
The theme is explored in all directions, with solos and ensemble interweaving in captivating ways. Most of the variations will be easily recognizable through their melodic or harmonic elements, but some will be less so, such as Variation #3, which highlights Coltrane’s cycle of major keys through B, G and Eb; Variation #18, which is the theme exactly retrograde, and finally, Variation #20, which only those who have heard the original 1958 recording will recognize as Coltrane’s cadenza on the final chord, a fitting conclusion.
